FAQ

Who are the teachers?
Ms. Melissa Dufrechou, Allison Lavender, and Thomas Furlough are our teachers. See the page Meet the Teachers to learn more about them.

We didn't know about strings and my child registered for another elective. Is it still possible to change to strings class?
Yes - contact your school's Assistant Principal to change your child schedule.

What instrument should my child play?
Our goal is for students to love their instrument so much that they will want to continue playing year after year. Encourage your child to listen to the sound of the instruments, and select the one he/she likes the sound of the best.

Can a small child play the larger instruments?
Yes. String instruments come in all sizes.

What is the difference between violin and viola?
The two instruments look similar. However, the viola is a little larger and has a low C string, while the violin has a high E string. More students choose violin because it is better known. But many like the lower sound of viola, and also want to do something a little different.

Can my child use Uncle Charlie's violin that has been in his attic for a few decades? (Is it perhaps a Stradivarius?) The teacher would need to evaluate the instrument. A beginner needs an instrument that is easy to play, has a good sound, and is easy to keep in tune. See the Rental Options page for more specific information.

Can we rent an instrument?
Yes, you will be given information about this later. Instrument rentals are offered as a rent-to-own plan, so that your rental fee (about $35/month) is applied to the purchase of the instrument.

Should I go ahead and rent or purchase the instrument now?
No. Wait until school begins.

My child has never shown any musical talent, and we don't have any musicians in our family. Should we encourage him?
Yes, this is one way that children discover their own interests and abilities. Since we start at the very beginning and teach them to read music as they learn to play, no musical background is necessary. Being in a school musical group is so much fun and students will make new friends through music!Bottom of Form
